The Spartan Order

The Spartan Order is the Metro series' elite brotherhood of Rangers, who protect the Metro's people under Colonel Miller and leave Moscow with Artyom in Metro Exodus. In Metro 2039 its first Spartan, Hunter, rules the Metro as Fuhrer, and the hero, the Stranger, is a former Spartan.

The Spartan Order is the elite band of Rangers who keep the peace in the Metro, and in Metro 2039 it has turned on itself: Hunter, whom Deep Silver calls "the first Spartan", now rules almost the whole Metro as Fuhrer of The Novoreich, wearing a decorated Novoreich version of Spartan armor, while the hero, The Stranger, is "a former Spartan warrior with a dark past" who believes Hunter has become what the Spartans fought. In the earlier games the Order is led by Colonel Miller, Artyom joins it in Metro: Last Light, and in Metro Exodus its Rangers leave Moscow on The Aurora. Metro 2039 is out Feb 4, 2027; the ending of Exodus is touched on below. The clip is ACG's Aug 2026 hands-on preview, from a preview build.

What is the Spartan Order?

An elite squad protecting the Metro's people, led by Miller, standing apart from the station powers of Metro Factions. Hanza, the trading league, is its natural ally. The Rangers' code is Hunter's line "If it's hostile, you kill it.", which Metro 2033 Redux gives as the achievement for becoming "a true ranger". The series' modes carry the name too: Ranger Mode, the no-HUD way to play first added to Metro 2033 in Aug 2010, and the Spartan style of the Redux games (see Metro Difficulty Modes). The clip is Gaming Harry's retelling of the Metro 2033 game.

Polis

Polis is the legendary heart of the Metro that Artyom sets out for in the novel Metro 2033, to warn the others and seek help. Readers often search for the Rangers of Polis; the sources read for this page as of Nov 3, 2026 do not describe how the Order and Polis are linked, so this page leaves that to the novel's own page.

The Spartans in Metro 2033 and Last Light

In Metro 2033 Hunter is the Ranger whose words sum up the Order. In Last Light, set in 2034, Artyom joins the Spartan Order and must choose a side in the Metro's civil wars, while the stations fight over the doomsday device of D6. Miller lost his legs at D6. Last Light's Faction Pack let players fight as a Ranger specialist, alongside missions for the Red Line and the Fourth Reich. The clip is Gaming Harry's retelling of Metro: Last Light.

The Spartans in Metro Exodus

By 2036 Artyom is "a Ranger of the SPARTA Order", respected throughout the Metro. When the Rangers learn that Hanza's leaders hid the survival of other cities, they leave on the Aurora, and Artyom leads them east across Russia for a new life. Rangers who ride the train go on missions of their own. The good ending's achievement reads "Assume command of the Order". The clip is Gaming Harry's retelling of Metro Exodus.

The Spartans in Metro 2039

Four years after the Rangers fled the Moscow Metro, the Order's legend has been taken over by the Metro's ruler. Hunter's image fills the Metro on posters, propaganda and statues, and his regime uses his old Ranger creed as its own. The Stranger, a former Spartan, narrates the Hunter trailer, blaming Hunter for lies and hypocrisy; its tagline is "Protect the Metro, from you." Artyom and the Rangers he led away "aren't coming back," GamesRadar+ wrote. Which Spartans, if any, remain in the Metro, and why the Stranger left the Order, are not told as of Nov 3, 2026. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 2026 hands-on preview, from a preview build.

The Spartan Helmet

The Metro 2039 Collector's Edition comes with a wearable replica of the Stranger's Spartan Helmet, with gas mask parts, revealed on Aug 24, 2026 and sold at selected retailers. Prices are on Metro 2039 Editions and Price.
