When does Metro 2039 come out?
On Feb 4, 2027, on every platform at once. No launch hour has been announced as of Nov 3, 2026; the US PlayStation Store's data says 16:00 UTC, which is store data rather than an announcement. The window moved once: the game was revealed on Apr 16, 2026 for "this winter", the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7 made it February 2027, and the State of Play on Sep 3 named the day. Some outlets call the June change a delay and others a narrowing; the makers never called it a delay. The whole history, the hour in other time zones and pre-loading are on Metro 2039 Release Date.
Editions and price
Metro 2039 sells in four editions as of Nov 3, 2026:

The Story Expansion has no name or date beyond 2027, and no edition plays early. Everything in each box is on Metro 2039 Editions and Price.
Platforms, PC requirements and Game Pass
PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC only: there is no PS4 or Xbox One version, no Switch 2 version announced and no Game Pass deal announced. On Xbox it is Xbox Play Anywhere and available through the cloud. The PC requirements are not published as of Nov 3, 2026; Steam lists only a 64-bit processor and operating system. 4A rebuilt its renderer to be fully ray traced, and PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X get a 60fps Performance Mode with ray tracing. Steam lists 15 languages, 12 with full audio, including Ukrainian; Russian is not among them. Details are on Metro 2039 Platforms and PC Requirements.
What is the story of Metro 2039?
Moscow, 2039: for a quarter century the survivors of the war have fought each other in the Metro, and now they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter, whose regime, the Novoreich, rules through propaganda and fear and promises a better life on the surface. Creative director Andriy Shevchenko says it is the first time in the Metro universe that almost the entire metro is united under one banner. The game is set four years after Artyom and the Spartan Rangers left Moscow at the start of Metro Exodus. The full setting is on Metro 2039 Story. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 2026 hands-on preview of a pre-release build.
The Stranger is the protagonist: a former Spartan warrior with a dark past who never wanted to return to the Metro, a recluse with violent waking nightmares who is forced back by his past. He is the first Metro lead you hear think aloud, and Artyom is not the protagonist. His name and voice actor are not known as of Nov 3, 2026. See The Stranger. The clip is TmarTn2's Aug 2026 preview of a pre-release build.
Hunter is the villain. The Spartan of Metro 2033, absent from the games since, is now the Fuhrer, his face on posters, propaganda and statues, and his old line "if it's hostile, you kill it" is the regime's creed. See Hunter and The Novoreich. The clip is IGN's Aug 2026 first preview, from a pre-release build in which Hunter was only teased.
Sevastopolskaya, an independent station on the brink of a hostile takeover, is the Stranger's base, and The Dark Ones, the beings of Metro 2033 and Last Light, return with ghosts and anomalous zones. 4A names the themes as "The Cost of Silence, The Horrors of Tyranny, and the Price of Freedom." Executive producer Jon Bloch calls it the reverse of Exodus's hope: a journey back into hell. See Sevastopolskaya. The clip is jackfrags's Aug 2026 preview of a pre-release build, at the station.
How does Metro 2039 play?
As a slow, tense survival shooter that mixes linear tunnels with wider surface areas, in 4A's words exploration, survival, combat and stealth in a single-player story. The previews disagree on how open it is: GamesRadar+ calls it more linear than Exodus, with wider surface areas, Xbox Wire describes open-ended exploration. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 2026 hands-on preview of a pre-release build.
What the trailers and previews have shown, all from pre-release builds:
- Weapons: the Shatun, a pneumatic rifle that must be kept pumped, as the signature gun; the Duplet shotgun, the Kalash and Molotovs; three primary slots plus a signature slot; attachments swapped in the field and new blueprints for parts. See Metro 2039 Weapons.
- Crafting: basic items such as medkits, filters and ammo from the backpack, stronger parts at Workbenches, which also clean weapons to stop them jamming; resources can now be taken from mutants.
- Currency: military-grade ammo is money again, as in 2033 and Last Light. See Military-Grade Ammo.
- Survival: a gas mask whose filter time shows on a watch you have to look at, a visor you wipe by hand, no crosshair and a paper map with handwritten objectives. See Metro Gas Masks and Filters.
- Tools: a breaching tool, a cutting torch and a UV lamp that reveals hidden mutants and repels Insectalis, plus night-vision goggles and a hand-pumped torch.
- Stealth and karma: lethal and non-lethal takedowns, a new lean, and the series' hidden karma system, changed but back.
- Enemies: Nosalises, flying Insectalis, bandits, ghosts and Novoreich forces; mutants hunt in coordinated family groups. See Metro Mutants.
Every area is handcrafted; Bloch says "Nothing is prefabricated". He also says the critical path is longer than Exodus's, with no figure. The systems in full are on Metro 2039 Gameplay.
Trailers and previews
Five main trailers as of Nov 3, 2026: the reveal at the Xbox First Look on Apr 16, 2026, the Hunter gameplay trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7, the Renegade trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug 25, PS5 Pro gameplay at the State of Play on Sep 3 and a pre-order trailer on Oct 13. Each, with what it showed and the leaks before the reveal, is on Metro 2039 Trailers.
The first hands-on came at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, where more than 5,000 people played the demo and Metro 2039 won Best Visuals at the Gamescom Award. Press played two to four hours of a pre-release build; GamesRadar+ called it an early Game of the Year contender. There are no reviews before launch. What the previews praised and questioned is on Metro 2039 Previews. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 2026 preview, over provided footage of the pre-release build.
Made in wartime Kyiv
4A Games is a Ukrainian studio, founded in Kyiv by former GSC Game World developers, with its headquarters in Malta since 2014. Most of the team works from the Kyiv office or remotely across Ukraine, through power outages and sheltering from rocket and drone attacks. Bloch says quite a lot of their plans changed overnight when Russia began its full-scale invasion in 2022: the sequel then in work was abandoned and the story had to be redone. The earlier games, he says, were about preventing war; this one is about its consequences. The clip is FGS's Sep 2026 interview with 4A's developers.
Glukhovsky, the Moscow-born author of the novels, wrote with them from exile; a Moscow court sentenced him in absentia to eight years in prison on Aug 7, 2023 for criticizing the invasion. That background is on Metro 2039 and the War in Ukraine, 4A Games and Dmitry Glukhovsky.
The Metro series before 2039
Metro 2039 continues a series that Deep Silver says has sold 50 million copies across the globe. In order:
| Game | Released | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Metro 2033 | Mar 16, 2010 | Artyom crosses the Metro to warn of the Dark Ones; published by THQ |
| Metro: Last Light | May 2013 | Artyom joins the Spartans amid the Metro's civil wars; Deep Silver after THQ's collapse |
| Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux | Aug 2014 | Both games rebuilt; a free next-gen update in Oct 2026 |
| Arktika.1 | Oct 2017 | 4A's VR shooter for Oculus Rift, outside the Metro story |
| Metro Exodus | Feb 15, 2019 | Artyom and the Spartans leave Moscow on the Aurora |
| The Two Colonels | Aug 20, 2019 | Exodus DLC under Novosibirsk |
| Sam's Story | Feb 11, 2020 | Exodus DLC in Vladivostok |
| Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition | May 6, 2021 (PC) | The ray-traced rebuild, free to owners |
| Metro Awakening | Nov 7, 2024 | VR prequel by Vertigo Games: Khan's origin |
Metro Exodus alone passed 10 million copies by its fifth anniversary. The games in story order and release order are on Metro Games in Order; figures are on Metro Series Sales, and playtimes on How Long to Beat Metro.
The novels and the world
The series began as a book. Dmitry Glukhovsky first posted Metro 2033 online for free around 2002, and it drew more than 2 million readers before a Russian print edition in 2005. He followed it with Metro 2034 (2009) and Metro 2035 (2015), the last of which leads into Metro Exodus. Readers of the second book will notice that it is set at a cut-off station the English blurb calls Sevastopol, with Hunter in it; Metro 2039 is an original story, though, not an adaptation. See Metro 2033 (Novel), Metro 2034 (Novel), Metro 2035 (Novel), the shared-world books of the Metro 2033 Universe and the Metro Film Adaptation that never got made. The clip is jackfrags's Aug 2026 preview of a pre-release build; the link to the books is his.
The world itself: after the war of 2013, the survivors of Moscow live in the Metro's stations as small states built around ideas, religions, water filters or defense, with the Reds, the Fourth Reich, the Hanza traders and the Spartan Order among them, and a surface poisoned by radiation and mutants. Artyom, Colonel Miller, Anna and Khan are the series' best-known people. Start with Metro Lore, then Metro Factions, The Spartan Order, Metro Characters, Artyom, Colonel Miller, Anna, Khan and The Aurora.
Where to start
You do not need the earlier games: Deep Silver's FAQ says no earlier Metro game is needed and calls 2039 a good entry point. Players with time before Feb 4, 2027 have an easy route: the two Redux games, which got a free next-gen update in Oct 2026, then Metro Exodus. Metro 2033 introduces Hunter and the Dark Ones, and Exodus's opening is where 2039's story picks up. The recommended order, difficulty modes and the endings are on Where to Start with Metro, Metro Difficulty Modes and Metro Endings.
What is not known yet?
As of Nov 3, 2026: the launch hour, the PC requirements, Series S modes, the voice cast, the Stranger's name, the campaign's length in hours, how karma works and how many endings there are, whether any earlier character returns, what the 2027 Story Expansion is, and every review score. This viki will add each as the makers publish it.

Characters
- Anna
Anna is Colonel Miller's daughter, the Spartan Order's best sniper, met in Metro: Last Light and married to Artyom by Metro Exodus. She has not been shown or announced for Metro 2039 as of Nov 3, 2026.
- Artyom
Artyom is the hero of the Metro novels and of Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus, a young man of VDNKh station who becomes a Spartan Ranger. He is not the protagonist of Metro 2039, and no return has been announced as of Nov 3, 2026.
- Colonel Miller
Colonel Miller is the commander of the Spartan Order in Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus, Anna's father and Artyom's father-in-law, who loses his legs at D6 and commands the Aurora. He stars in The Two Colonels; Metro 2039 has not shown him as of Nov 3, 2026.
- Hunter
Hunter is the Spartan Ranger of Metro 2033 whose creed is "If it's hostile, you kill it", missing from the games after it and back in Metro 2039 as the Fuhrer of the Novoreich, the regime that rules almost the entire Moscow Metro. In the novel Metro 2034 he turns up at Sevastopol station a year after Metro 2033.
- Khan
Khan is the mystic of the Metro series, a shamanic guide to the tunnels' unseen side in Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light and the hero of the VR prequel Metro Awakening. Metro 2039's creative director quoted him to explain why souls cannot leave the Metro.
- Metro Characters
Metro 2039's named characters so far are the Stranger, a former Spartan who is the hero, Hunter, Fuhrer of the Novoreich, and the bandit leader Kaban. The earlier Metro games center on Artyom, Colonel Miller, Anna, Khan, Pavel and the Aurora's crew.
- The Stranger
The Stranger is the protagonist of Metro 2039, a former Spartan and recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares who is forced back into the Moscow Metro. He replaces Artyom as the lead and is the series' first fully voiced protagonist; his real name and voice actor are not announced as of Nov 3, 2026.
Guides
- How Long to Beat Metro
Metro 2039's length has not been announced; 4A Games says only that its critical path is longer than Metro Exodus's. By HowLongToBeat's player figures, Metro Exodus takes 16 hours for the main story, Metro 2033 about 9.5 and Metro: Last Light about 10.5.
- Metro Difficulty Modes
Metro's hardest setting is Ranger Mode, which removes the HUD and makes ammunition scarce; it began as a 2010 add-on for Metro 2033, was a paid pre-order extra in Metro: Last Light, and is built into Metro Redux and Metro Exodus, where it is Ranger Hardcore. Metro 2039's difficulty modes have not been announced.
- Metro Endings
Every mainline Metro game so far has two endings, picked by a hidden karma system rather than a final menu choice: Metro 2033's ordinary and "Enlightened" endings, Metro: Last Light's "Redemption" and "C'est la vie", and Metro Exodus's good and bad endings. Metro 2039 brings hidden karma back, but how many endings it has is not announced.
- Metro Games in Order
The Metro games in release order are Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), Metro Redux (2014), Arktika.1 (2017), Metro Exodus (2019) with its two DLCs and Enhanced Edition, Metro Awakening (2024) and Metro 2039 (Feb 4, 2027). In story order, Metro Awakening (2028) comes first and Metro 2039 last.
- Metro Gas Masks and Filters
In Metro 2039 the gas mask's filter time shows on a digital watch the Stranger has to look at, which beeps as a filter runs out; filters are crafted from the backpack and the mask visor is wiped by hand. Gas masks and filters have been part of every Metro game, and Metro Exodus let you craft filters and patch a cracked mask.
- Military-Grade Ammo
Military-grade 5.45x39mm rounds are the money of the Moscow Metro in Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, and they are the currency again in Metro 2039 after Metro Exodus dropped them. The rounds are both money and ammunition, so a military-grade shot fired is money spent.
- Where to Start with Metro
You do not need to play any earlier Metro game before Metro 2039: Deep Silver calls it a good jumping-on point with a new hero and cast. For the background, start with Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux, then Metro Exodus; Exodus alone is the shortcut.
Lore
- Metro Factions
In Metro 2039 almost the whole Metro is one faction, the Novoreich of the Fuhrer Hunter, with the independent station Sevastopolskaya holding out. Before it the Metro was split between Hanza, the communist Red Line, the Nazi Fourth Reich, Polis, the Spartan Rangers and bandits.
- Metro Lore
The Metro story begins with a nuclear war in 2013 that drives Moscow's survivors into the Metro, where stations become small rival states. It runs through Metro 2033, Last Light and Exodus to 2039, when Hunter's Novoreich rules almost the whole Metro.
- Metro Mutants
Metro 2039's mutants shown so far are Nosalises, back as bear-sized mole-like creatures, and the flying Insectalis, which a UV lamp repels. The earlier Metro games add watchmen, lurkers, demons, librarians, amoebas, spiders, humanimals and more.
- Sevastopolskaya
Sevastopolskaya is the independent Moscow Metro station that serves as the Stranger's base in Metro 2039, one of the biggest surviving colonies and under threat of a Novoreich takeover. In Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel Metro 2034 it is Sevastopol station, cut off from the rest of the Metro, where Hunter appears.
- The Aurora
The Aurora is the armored steam locomotive of Metro Exodus, the moving base on which Artyom, Anna, Colonel Miller and the Spartans cross Russia for a year after leaving Moscow. It has not appeared in Metro 2039 as of Nov 3, 2026.
- The Dark Ones
The Dark Ones are the mind-invading beings from Moscow's surface in the Metro novel and games, the threat of Metro 2033 and the hidden saviors of Metro: Last Light, who told Artyom they would return. They return in Metro 2039, where Hunter calls them an enemy to be destroyed.
- The Novoreich
The Novoreich is the regime that rules almost the entire Moscow Metro in Metro 2039, led by its Fuhrer, the former Spartan Hunter, and held together by propaganda, misinformation and fear. It echoes the Fourth Reich, the Nazi faction of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, but the makers have not said how the two are connected.
- The Spartan Order
The Spartan Order is the Metro series' elite brotherhood of Rangers, who protect the Metro's people under Colonel Miller and leave Moscow with Artyom in Metro Exodus. In Metro 2039 its first Spartan, Hunter, rules the Metro as Fuhrer, and the hero, the Stranger, is a former Spartan.
Metro 2039
- Metro 2039 and the War in Ukraine
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 changed Metro 2039: 4A Games, whose team works mostly in Kyiv, scrapped the story it had, rebooted the project and made a darker game about tyranny, propaganda and the consequences of war, developed through blackouts and air raids. Co-writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, an opponent of the war, was sentenced in absentia in Russia in 2023.
- Metro 2039 Editions and Price
Metro 2039 costs $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the digital Deluxe Edition, which adds a 2027 Story Expansion, the soundtrack and an art book; a physical Deluxe and a limited Collector's Edition with a wearable Spartan helmet are sold in stores.
